Argument Essay Based on “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian”

 Why has there been an increasing amount of parents being cautious toward the book their child decides to read? Parents fear the books that are chosen to be read by children might have an effect on their natural behavior and the way they learn. Many adults believe Sherman Alexie’s “The absolutely true diary of a part time indian” is completely inappropriate because of it’s use of bad language and should be limited from student libraries however, I believe that the book by Sherman Alexie shouldn’t be limited towards the 8th graders and up because this book can can make people feel confident about themselves/ helped in hard times and distribute some suggestions on how solve a situation.

The reason why Sherman Alexie’s “The absolutely true diary of a part time indian” shouldn’t be limited towards 8th and above graders because this book can make people feel confident. To begin with, in the comment section of the article “Why the best kids books are written in blood” an anonymous person stated “This article is just one more reason why Alexie is and will always be my hero” this proves that this book has helped people in times of trouble. In addition, this allows people out there with the same situations to know that they aren’t alone in this process  and therefore, they should be much more confident talking about about it to others. In his stories he’s saying that there’s always hope in a situation for example, on page 218 of “The absolutely true diary of a part time indian” it states “I wanted to find him and hug him and beg him to forgive me for leaving” This proves that Junoir felt like there was still hope left in their friendship after their big arguement.

Secondly, This book can distribute a substantial amount of suggestions to help solve problems towards the readers for a myriad of reasons. To begin with,  in the article “Why the best kid books are written in blood” in the comment section somebody wrote “Best book ever. Helped me get through some hard times”. This quotation proves that the reader took advice from junior’s troubles and used it such as nothing is stronger than friendship or on what to do in a new school. In addition, when you think about it this book is a like a physical therapist identifying what’s wrong and trying to find a way to help. On page 120, “how to pretend you’re not poor” there’s a guide on how to pretend you’re not poor. He has this idea of creating a guide for readers who want to pretend to be people they aren’t.

Lastly, many adults view this book as inappropriate content because of it’s use of its use of foul language. To start off, many parents are beginning to take action in their child's reading life because of all of the dramatic titles and covers children notice that seem enjoyable. In addition,  this book includes racial comments, disabilities, bullying, and from the video “10 Books” “should be banned because of it’s sexually explicit content. Parents don't enjoy this book because it's not teaching their children anything, but inappropriate language that they don’t want their child to reproduce . However, parents also judge a book to early because usually it's the good books that often have a lesson at the end of the story, especially an autobiography. Autobiographies tend to be about a person and their experiences and their experiences tend be a lesson to children because it’s giving them the knowledge they need to succeed in life.

As a conclusion, many people view Sherman Alexie's "The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian" as a book with bad language however, I believe this book has lessons that teach you a lot about hope and the true meaning of friendship which is trust and honesty.
